Curly Hair Tips and Tricks

People with curls often dream of having straight hair because it is easier to maintain. We will dispel this misconception by sharing with you how to style your curly hair into a flawless hairstyle. Proper care and styling tips will help you transform your unruly hair into luscious curls.

It is a fact that curly hair requires special attention and care. It  may be frizzy, prone to breakage, have split ends, tangled, dry, or difficult to style. If left untreated or improperly cared for, it can become dull and brittle. In order to minimize these problems, special care is needed. Today we will share about how to properly care for curly hair in order to avoid damage.

Natural features

Why do some people have curly hair, and others don't? Nature itself determines this - at birth, each person has the shape and structure of their hair. Such features are permanent and practically do not change with age.

Features of curly hair that you should know about:

  1. Curly hair can be more porous; the hair cuticles are usually open - this is what makes the curls look dull and hard, often fluffy or frizzy.

  2. Curls are more easily damaged by dyeing, chemical or thermal straightening, as well as various aggressive hair treatments.

Moreover, unbalanced nutrition, stress, hormonal disruptions, and weather conditions also play a role.

Curly Hair Tips and Tricks

Best way to take care of your curly hair at home:

Shampoo selection: How to wash curly hair?

Your curly hair will need special shampoos, these shampoos are distinguished by a mild detergent base and they gently cleanse your hair. Your shampoo (as well as other products for curly hair) should not include sulfates and are even better if labeled "for curly hair" or "for dry hair."

You need to wash your hair as it gets dirty, ideally once every 5-7 days. The shampoo will remove impurities, and the conditioner will “close” the hair cuticle. When washing your hair, be gentle and use warm water instead of hot. You can also choose to use a clarifying shampoo every month if your hair starts acting different there's probably a product build up!! The clarifying shampoo will remove this build up.

When shopping for products try to avoid silicones, in time they will build up and block moisture from entering your curly hair. Curly hair loves more natural and organic products!

A good idea is to try “co-washing”, this is a gentle way of washing. It involves replacing shampoo with hair conditioner. The conditioner is applied along the entire length of your hair, gently massage the scalp, then rinse, repeating the sequence of actions 2-3 times. We would suggest alternating this with regular shampooing so that your scalp gets a cleansing every second time you wash your hair.

Drying and styling

There are many ways you can wear your curly hair: wet curl look, messy bun, half up half down, messy top knot, relaxed ponytail, wrapped with a scarf, or just plain natural!

In order not to harm your hair, you should take into account how you dry and style it. Curly hair is susceptible to heat (from a blow dryer or straightening iron), chemicals, and improper brushing. Focus on the following points when styling your hair:

  • The best thing to use is a detangling brush like this one or a wide tooth comb. This will help to gently detangle your curly hair without ripping it .

  • Use the “LOC'' method as a way of layering hair products; L is for Leave-in conditioner, O is for oil and C is for cream or any type of styling product you want to use! Layering products in this order will help for optimal moisture retention and frizz control!

  • Do not straighten your curls with an iron every day. This leads to damage and can dry out the hair. If you're planning on using hot tools on your curly hair, make sure to do a deep conditioner prior. Always use a heat protectant when using heat on your curls to avoid damage or changing your curl pattern.

Towels and pillowcases

After washing your hair, pay special attention to the towel you choose to dry your hair. Curls require special care, and it is better to choose the softest possible microfiber towel. Using cotton towels leads to the main problem of curly hair - frizz. In turn, high-quality microfiber towels dry the hair very gently without fluffing it and without damaging the structure of the curl.

How you use the towel is also very important, do not rub your hair too fast or with intense movements.

Hairdressers recommend choosing pillowcases made of silk or satin. These fabrics are gentle on your hair (unlike cotton and other materials) and will not cause friction, tangles or frizz.

Haircut

The right haircut will eliminate the need to style your hair for a long time in the morning. A professional hairdresser who specializes in curly hair will be your “hair's best friend”.

A good hairdresser skilled in curly hair will select a haircut based on the shape of your face and the condition of your hair. Visit your hairdresser every 2 - 6 months to keep your hair healthy and looking its best!

A few more tricks

  • Use an oil like coconut or olive oil for dry ends; it will also revitalize and add shine to dull hair;

  • If you don’t have a microfiber towel, use a regular T-shirt. This will prevent your hair from becoming too frizzy, as the T-shirt absorbs less water than a terry towel. This will help prevent tangled hair as well.

  • Don’t touch your curls after you’ve styled them until they are fully dried or else this will cause frizz.

  • Curly hair is sensitive so care for it like you would an expensive piece of fabric; gently!
