Human Hair Wig Care Tips

You’ve bought your first human hair wig or hairpiece and have been loving it! But now it needs a good wash and styling. Don’t panic, you can do it. Read the below tips on how to prepare, wash, condition, dry and style your human hair wig or hairpiece.

Preparation

  • Before washing your human hair wig or hairpiece, gently remove any tangles using a wide tooth comb or your fingers;

  • Begin at the ends of the hair, moving upwards a few inches at a time, until the hair is smooth and tangle free;

  • Check-out Flawless Lengths gentle wig brush which is a perfect tool for this.

Washing The Wig Cap

  • When washing your human hair wig or hairpiece, your main focus is the inside of the wig cap where it touches your scalp;

  • Close the stopper in your sink and turn on the water, making sure it is cool or lukewarm, then hold your wig so the inside of the cap is facing outwards and the hair is traveling in the same direction as the water;

  • Apply a small amount of gentle sulfate shampoo designed for human hair, and gently massage the wig cap with your fingers, paying particular attention to areas where you may have applied wig glue.

Washing The Hair

Once the cap of the wig or hairpiece is clean, immerse the whole wig or hair piece in the soapy water that has collected in the sink, and massage gently;

  • Do not rub the hair, particularly in the wrong direction, as this will cause tangles;

  • Once the whole wig or hairpiece is clean, rinse thoroughly with cool clean water until the water runs clear.

Conditioning

Apply a generous amount of conditioner on the hair only, avoiding the wig cap (applying conditioner to the base of the wig cap may weaken the knots that secure the hair to the wig cap;

  • With fingers, work conditioner through the ends of the hair, and gently work upwards, again voiding the base of the wig cap or hairpiece;

  • Leave on for about 3 - 5 minutes;

  • Rinse thoroughly in cold to lukewarm water until the water runs clear.

Deep Conditioning or Hair Mask

To deep condition your wig or hair piece, follow the same procedure as above;

  • Next, bundle the wig or hairpiece up in a plastic bag or shower cap and leave it overnight. This will allow the moisturizing qualities of the deep conditioner/hair mask to soak into your wig or hairpiece;

  • The next morning, rinse thoroughly in lukewarm water until the water runs clear.

Drying

  • Turn your wig or hairpiece right side out and gently squeeze out the excess water, making sure not to wring the hair, as this will cause damage;

  • Place a towel on a flat surface and lay your wig or hairpiece at one end, roll the towel up with the wig or hairpiece inside;

  • Press down on the towel to let it absorb the excess water from the wig or hairpiece;

  • Unroll the towel and remove your wig or hairpiece;

  • Smooth out your wig or hairpiece then place it on a wig stand to air dry. If you don’t have a wig stand, lay it flat on a towel to dry;

  • Do not use a regular brush to detangle your human hair wig or hairpiece while it is wet, instead gently use a wide tooth comb or a wig brush. Check-out Flawless Lengths wig hairbrush, this is the perfect tool for this;

  • Let the hair completely dry, this will protect and ensure the longevity of the wig;

  • If using a heat tool, make sure the temperature is no more than 350 degrees.

Styling and Storing Your Wig

  • Once your wig or hairpiece is completely dry, apply a small amount of leave in conditioner or treatment mist to the hair only (not on the lace or cap), let it dry and style as you wish;

  • Store your wig on a wig stand or wig form that is smaller than the base of the cap, this prevents the cap from stretching;

  • Keep away from direct sunlight as this will fade the hair;

  • Try not to wear your hairpiece while sleeping, this may result in hair loss, breakage or matting. If you do, a silk/satin bonnet or pillowcase should be used;

  • Avoid contact with chlorinated water, sea water and hot water to avoid damage to your wig.
