Winter Dry Scalp Rescue Guide

As someone who’s struggled with dry scalp for years, I’ve tried so many ways to remedy it! I’ve come up with a small guide on some of the stuff that has really worked!!

Check it out below!

(P.S I’ve listed two of my favorite products to treat dry scalp as well!)

1. Identify the Cause:
  • Shampoo and Products: Harsh shampoos or styling products may contribute to dryness. You may want to consider switching to a sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo.
  • Weather: Cold weather and low humidity levels can dry out the skin, including the scalp.
  • Medical Conditions: Conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or seborrheic dermatitis can cause dry scalp. The best method for you would be to consult a dermatologist for a proper diagnosis.
2. Choose the Right Shampoo:
  • It is important to choose the right shampoo for your dry scalp and/or hair. When shopping, read the labels and choose a sulfate-free moisturizing shampoo that is sulfate-free and that specifically meets your needs and states the ingredients target dry scalp and hair.
  • Some of the best ingredients for dry scalp and hair are tea tree oil, aloe vera and chamomile. These ingredients are known to soothe a dry scalp
3. Limit Washing Frequency:
  • Over washing your hair can strip your scalp and hair of its natural oils. These natural oils play a big part in moisturizing both your scalp and hair. The best rule of thumb is to wash your hair no more than 2-3 times a week.
  • On the other hand, under washing your hair can also have a negative effect on both scalp and hair. Washing your hair 2 - 3 times a week is perfect, but once a week is a must!
  • A tip when washing your hair is to use lukewarm water instead of hot water as hot water can strip the natural nourishing oils from your scalp.
4. Scalp Massage:
  • Gently massaging your scalp is a great way to improve blood circulation and distribute your hair's natural oils. You can use a shampoo massage brush like this one to make sure your scalp gets a massage and a stimulating shampoo.
5. Condition Regularly:
  • Conditioning is an important part of your hair routine and necessary if you have a dry scalp and dry hair. It is a must to use a conditioner every time you wash your hair. Make sure that it is suitable for your hair type as this will keep your hair and scalp looking and feeling it’s best.
6. Avoid Heat Styling:
  • During the winter months it is best to limit the use of heated styling tools as they can contribute to the dryness you are experiencing. Many people are embracing their natural hair, give it a try!
  • If and when you decide to use heat on your hair, always, and I mean always, use a heat protector spray
7. Hydrate:
  • Drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated is a mega benefit to your skin and scalp during every season, but during the winter it is a must! Being dehydrated will definitely leave your scalp and skin super dry! Challenge yourself by drinking two 8oz glasses of water a day and then build up.
8. Use a Humidifier:
  • Using a humidifier in  dry climates or during the winter, can add much needed moisture to the air that will prevent your scalp from drying out.
9. Natural Remedies:
  • Spray your scalp with water then apply some natural oils like jojoba, olive oil or coconut oil and leave it on for at least 30 minutes before you shampoo. Your scalp and hair will love you!
  • You can also choose to use Flawless Lengths hair growth oil,  a wonderful product which has a mix of naturally formulated ingredients to stimulate your scalp!
10. Avoid Irritants:
  • There are a wide variety of hair care products out there, some nourish your scalp and hair and some irritate. Make sure to stay away from hair care products that contain alcohol, as it can be drying.
11. Protect Your Scalp:
  • If you are one of those brave souls who doesn’t like to wear a hat in the winter, well this could be a cause of your dry scalp and hair. Wearing a hat in extreme weather conditions shields your scalp from harsh elements. Go shopping! Find a hat you fall in love with then wear it in style.
12. Consult a Professional:
  • If you have tried everything and the dryness persists, your next step should be to consult a dermatologist or a trichologist for a thorough examination and personalized advice.
13. Balanced Diet:
  • Food gives us life. Including foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals in your diet contribute towards overall skin health.
14. Avoid Scratching:
  • We all feel an itch every once in a while that we cannot help but relieve by scratching. However constant scratching of your scalp can worsen the dryness and lead to irritation.Resist that scratching!
Remember, everyone's scalp is unique, so it may take some time to find the right routine for you. If the problem persists or worsens, it's advisable to seek professional advice.
